Welcome to UC Irvine Division of Continuing Education TEFL Programs!
At UC Irvine DCE, we are proud to offer high-quality, well-respected teacher-training programs for those wishing to teach English as a second or foreign language. We offer two separate programs for two similar yet distinct types of students: The Accelerated Certificate Program (ACP TEFL) for international students, and TEFL Teaching English Abroad (TEFL TEA) for students already living in the United States. Both programs offer a core curriculum that is adapted to the special needs of each program.
ACP TEFL
This is a one-quarter program for full-time international students, including 192 hours of course work. There are 8 required courses. The program welcomes both experienced teachers and those wishing to teach for the first time. The ACP TEFL program is offered three times per year: spring, summer, and fall quarters. Some notable features of the certificate program include:
"The Mission of the Certificate Program in TEFL is to train and equip international and domestic teacher-trainees with practical teaching skills and cultural awareness to be able to successfully teach English abroad."
TEFL Teaching English Abroad
This TEFL certificate program serves people already living in the US whose goal is to teach English as a Foreign Language abroad. It is a one-quarter program consisting of 180 class hours, most of which are the same as courses in the ACP TEFL Certificate program. This program is offered three times per year: spring, summer, and fall quarters.

A message from Roger Dupuy, TEFL Academic Coordinator:
"You are not a student anymore; you are a teacher in training. The difference is how you may need to consider yourself and your conduct. I have a dear friend that went through flight attendant training. She had to show up to every single training class on time in full flight attendant uniform, with full make up, high heels and stockings. Training started at 7:30 am sharp. The rules were strict: after 2 violations, they were kindly expelled from the program. My friend is not a morning person and was always late for everything yet she amazingly made it through flight attendant school. She made it because she wanted to fly. There's something professional about that attitude. Coming to class ready to teach right when that bell rings is powerful and sends a strong message to your students. They will take you more seriously. Why not start now? Coming to class ready to learn is a true gift to the teacher. We all have our bad days, but striving to be the best is what we all should pursue! -Roger Dupuy |
