Traveling Outside of the United States
A travel form must be submitted and you must obtain a signature on your I‐20 from the UC Irvine Division of Continuing Education each time you travel outside the U.S. Please bring your I-20, passport, I‐94 and visa prior along with the form when requesting a travel endorsement. It is your responsibility to ensure that your visa and travel documents are in order to re‐enter the U.S. When traveling outside the U.S., please expect that your I-94 will be taken at the ticket counter upon your check-in. You will be issued a new I-94 upon your return to the U.S. Bring your new I-94 to our office within 1 week of being back in the United States. If you are not returning to your home country, you should check the requirements of the country you are visiting. Some countries require a visa. You may need an in-transit visa for countries where you are making a connecting flight. Be sure to check before you travel. Most countries have immigration websites that provide visa information.
Please prepare early and obtain the required signature on your I-20 at least two weeks prior to your travel date!
List of Documents Needed for Re-Entry to the United States:
1. Valid Passport
2. Valid F-1 Visa
3. Valid I-20 signed by UC Irvine Division of Continuing Education
Custom and Border Patrol also recommends that you have the following:
1. Evidence of financial resources
2. Evidence of student status (recent tuition receipts, transcripts)
3. Name and contact information for the UC Irvine Division of Continuing Education Immigration Advisor (DSO) who signed your I-20.
Will you be applying for a new visa?
If your visa expired or you changed visa status while the U.S. you must obtain a new visa prior to re-entry. It is recommended that you apply for a visa in your Country of Residence. Contact the U.S. Consulate where you will apply for a visa for information on visa appointments, document requirements, and application processing times. Citizens of Canada do not require a visa to enter the U.S., but must have appropriate visa documents.
Security Clearances
If you are applying for a new visa be prepared for possible delays due to security clearances. A special clearance is mandatory in cases of name‐check
based hits, nationality‐based requirements, or an individual’s background and/or purpose for being in the United States. There are several layers of security clearances and several agencies involved. Therefore, issuance of your visa may be delayed if you are selected for further security clearance processing.
UC Irvine Division of Continuing Education cannot speed up this process.
Automatic visa revalidation (for travel to Canada, Mexico, or adjacent islands)
You may be eligible to travel to Mexico or Canada and re‐enter even if your visa has expired or visa category has changed. Your visa will be
